What the absenteeism rate calculator works out
Absenteeism rate is the share of scheduled working days that were missed. It compares the total days people were absent with the total days the whole team was due to work.
How it is calculated
Find the available working days
Available days = number of employees x working days in the period.
Divide absence by availability
Absenteeism rate = total days absent / available days x 100.
Worked example
20 employees over a month with 22 working days gives 440 available days. With 18 days of absence, the rate is 18 / 440 x 100 = 4.09%.
See who was absent without a spreadsheet
Wrkbase attendance has a monthly summary for managers: present, absent, late and early-leave counts for each employee. Days covered by approved leave are not counted as absent.
Good to know before you rely on it
Should approved leave be counted?
Usually not. The absenteeism rate is meant to show unplanned absence such as sickness, so booked holiday is normally left out. Whichever you choose, count the same way every period.
How do I count part days?
Use decimals. A half day of absence is 0.5, so three half days and two full days are 3.5 days.
What does the absenteeism rate calculator not show?
It gives one figure for the whole team. It does not show whether absence is spread evenly or concentrated in a few people or short, frequent spells. The Bradford Factor calculator looks at that pattern for one person.
