What the overtime calculator works out

Overtime pay is the extra paid for hours worked beyond a set threshold in a week, at a higher rate than normal. This calculator splits one workweek into regular and overtime hours and prices each.

The formula

How it is calculated

  1. Split the week at the threshold

Hours up to the threshold are regular hours. 46 hours with a 40-hour threshold is 40 regular hours and 6 overtime hours.

  2. Work out the overtime rate

Multiply the hourly rate by the overtime multiplier. $20 an hour at time and a half is $30 an hour.

  3. Add the two together

    40 hours at $20 is $800, 6 hours at $30 is $180, so the week pays $980.

Know the hours before you pay them

Wrkbase records hours as people work: the timer starts when a task moves to In progress, and attendance logs sign-in, breaks and sign-off. Time tracking and attendance are on the Free plan, for up to 5 people.

Questions

Good to know before you rely on it

How do you calculate overtime pay?

Overtime pay = overtime hours x hourly rate x overtime multiplier. For 6 overtime hours at $20 an hour and time and a half: 6 x 20 x 1.5 = $180, on top of regular pay for the first 40 hours.

What is time and a half?

One and a half times the regular hourly rate. At $20 an hour, time and a half is $30 an hour. Double time is twice the rate, $40 an hour.

When is overtime owed under US federal law?

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, covered employees must receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek, at a rate not less than time and one-half their regular rate. Some employees are exempt from this rule.

Is overtime owed for weekends or holidays?

Not by federal law alone. The FLSA does not require overtime pay for work on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays unless those hours take the week over 40. An employer or a state can set a more generous rule.

Do states have their own overtime rules?

Some do. California, for example, also requires time and a half for hours over 8 in a workday and double time for hours over 12 in a workday. Check your own state labor office before relying on the federal rule.

Does Wrkbase calculate overtime pay?

Daily overtime, yes, on the Team plan. Hours past a daily threshold you set are paid at your multiplier, 1.5 times by default, on an hourly pay line. It does not apply a weekly threshold like the federal 40-hour rule, so use this overtime calculator for weekly overtime and add the amount to the pay run as a bonus.
