What the employee turnover rate calculator works out
Employee turnover rate is the share of your workforce that left during a period. It is measured against the average number of employees over that period, so a team that grew or shrank is judged fairly.
How it is calculated
Find the average headcount
Average headcount = (employees at the start + employees at the end) / 2.
Divide leavers by the average
Turnover rate = employees who left / average headcount x 100.
Worked example
Starting with 40 people and ending with 44 gives an average of 42. If 6 people left, turnover is 6 / 42 x 100 = 14.29%.
Keep the people records the number comes from
Wrkbase keeps every employee in one directory with onboarding and offboarding checklists. It does not calculate a turnover rate for you: use this page for that.
Good to know before you rely on it
Who counts as someone who left?
Everyone whose employment ended in the period, whether they resigned or were let go. To see only resignations, count those alone and you have the voluntary turnover rate.
Is a monthly rate comparable to a yearly one?
Not directly. A monthly rate covers one month of leavers. For a rough yearly figure from one month, multiply by 12, or better, add up the leavers for the full year and use this employee turnover rate calculator once.
What is a good turnover rate?
It depends heavily on industry, role and location, so there is no single number to aim for. The more useful comparison is your own rate over time.
