The Wrkbase team management blog

Every pay period, somebody has to turn hours into pay. There are three ways software handles that handoff, and the difference is how much of it you still do by hand.

A time clock records when people start and stop. Payroll decides what they are paid. Five tools that do both, what each charges, and the kind of team each one suits.

Timekeeping is the record of when people worked. Payroll is what they are owed for it. Five checks that tell you whether one tool can be trusted with both.

One charges per person, the other per location. That single difference decides most Buddy Punch vs Homebase comparisons before features come into it.

What to record for every employee and every pay period, a monthly routine that catches mistakes before anyone is paid, and when a spreadsheet, a payroll service, or payroll tracking software fits.

Almost every tool here can do payroll, and almost every tool here can do time tracking. Whether you need pay calculated from hours, or just hours and pay in one place, decides which one fits.

There are really three options, not one: manual timesheets, activity/screenshot monitoring, or letting the timer be a byproduct of work someone was already recording. Each is a real trade-off, not a solved problem.

Most tools call three very different things "AI": a chatbot that answers questions, a drafting assist, and something that changes data. The label doesn't tell you which one you're getting.

"AI-powered" usually means an algorithm guessing at idle time from activity signals. Wrkbase's time tracking is automatic in a different, deliberately non-ML way: deterministic, not inferred.

The usual answer to this question is monitoring software. Here is the actual mechanism that answers it without watching anyone.

Most tools answer this by watching screens or building a virtual office. Wrkbase answers a narrower question honestly: is the work moving, not whether someone looks busy.

These three get used almost interchangeably in software marketing. They're not the same category, and the difference shows up directly in what each one is built to answer.

These two get used interchangeably in casual conversation, but the products barely overlap. Here's the actual distinction, and where Wrkbase honestly sits.

Priority only works as a signal if most things aren't top priority. Here's how to keep it that way on a small team, without a heavyweight process.

"Payroll with time tracking" means two different things: pay calculated from hours, or hours and pay kept on one record. Here's how to tell which one you need.

A remote team has no door to badge through, so attendance can't just mean a punch clock moved online. Here's what the record needs to capture instead.

Every tool now has "AI" on its pricing page. The real question is whether it can act on your data, or whether it's a metered add-on for drafting text.

Every tool below can carry a company-wide conversation. The real question is whether it lives next to the work, or in a separate app you switch to.

A timer that starts and stops is the easy part. The real differences show up in what happens to the hours after, and whether they have to be exported anywhere.

A clock-in/clock-out button is solved everywhere. The real differences show up in what's bundled versus billed as a separate add-on past the punch clock.

Every tool here can move a task across a board. The differences show up once a task needs a timesheet, a permission check, or an AI agent that acts on it.
