What the Alaska overtime calculator works out

Most US states follow the federal rule: overtime after 40 hours in a week. Alaska adds a daily rule on top. This calculator applies both to one week of hours, without counting any hour twice.

The formula

How it is calculated

  1. Split each day at the daily limit

Hours up to 8 in a day are regular hours. Hours past that are overtime at time and a half.

  2. Check the week

Add up the regular hours. Any regular hours past 40 in the week are overtime too.

  3. Worked example

At $20 an hour: Monday 10 hours and Tuesday 9 hours give 3 daily overtime hours. The regular hours add up to 44, so 4 more are weekly overtime. Pay is 40 x $20 = $800, plus 7 x $30 = $210: $1,010 for the week.

Know the hours before you pay them

Wrkbase records hours as people work: attendance logs sign-in, breaks and sign-off for each day, and a task timer starts when a task moves to In progress. Both are on the Free plan, for up to 5 people.

Questions

Good to know before you rely on it

When is overtime owed in Alaska?

Alaska requires time and a half for hours worked over 8 in a single day and over 40 in a single week.

Is there double time in Alaska?

The state rule this calculator applies is time and a half only, for hours past 8 in a day and past 40 in a week. An employer can choose to pay more.

Does this cover every case?

No. It applies the daily and weekly rules to hourly pay. Exemptions, alternative work schedules, and rules for particular industries or a seventh day of work in a row are not applied. Check the state labor office page linked above.

Does Wrkbase calculate overtime pay?

Daily overtime, yes, on the Team plan. Hours past a daily threshold you set are paid at one multiplier, 1.5 times by default. It does not apply weekly thresholds, double time or any state rule, so use this calculator for the full amount and add the difference to the pay run as a bonus.
