About this calculator

What the michigan overtime calculator works out

Most US states follow the federal rule: overtime after 40 hours in a week. Michigan sets overtime by the workweek, with no daily limit. This calculator adds up one week of hours and pays the hours past 40 at time and a half.

The formula

How it is calculated

1

Add up the week

Add the hours worked on each day of the workweek. Every day counts the same; there is no daily limit.

2

Split at the weekly limit

The first 40 hours are regular hours. Hours past 40 in the week are overtime at time and a half.

3

Worked example

At $20 an hour: five days of 9 hours and 4 hours on Saturday make 49 hours. The first 40 are regular, the last 9 are overtime. Pay is 40 x $20 = $800, plus 9 x $30 = $270: $1,070 for the week.

Questions

Good to know before you rely on it

When is overtime owed in Michigan?

Michigan requires nonexempt employees to be paid one and one-half times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a 7-day workweek.

Who is exempt from overtime in Michigan?

The state FAQ gives a minimum salary of $684 a week, or $35,568 a year, for the executive, administrative and professional exemption, which it describes as the current federal standard salary amount. This calculator applies no exemptions, so it is for nonexempt hourly pay.

Does this cover every case?

No. It applies the weekly rule to hourly pay. Exemptions, alternative work schedules, and rules for particular industries or a seventh day of work in a row are not applied. Check the state labor office page linked above.

Does Wrkbase calculate overtime pay?

Daily overtime, yes, on the Team plan. Hours past a daily threshold you set are paid at one multiplier, 1.5 times by default. It does not apply weekly thresholds, double time or any state rule, so use this calculator for the full amount and add the difference to the pay run as a bonus.
